How A Simple Experiment Turned Into A Massive Success Story
The year was 1996. A brand new programming language called Java was released.
An online auction site called Ebay debuted.
Gasoline was a mere $1.22 per gallon and I had a nice comfortable job as an IT technician
for a privately owned company.
I was earning a comfortable living... at least my paycheck was enough to support myself.
My boss was a real jerk but I figured it was because the entire computer industry had been struggling lately.
In fact, I felt pretty lucky that I even had a full-time IT tech job. I knew
plenty of people who didn't back then.
But one day, my life took a major unexpected turn...
I Had Suddenly Lost My Job!
One morning I showed up for work... and found out the entire staff didn't have a job
anymore. It turns out that my boss had grown tired of running a struggling business and decided to
close the doors instead.
None of the staff were given any advance warning or notice.
Suddenly, dozens of people like me were out of a job.
I was shocked. I hadn't expected something like this to happen. I wasn't sure what
to do next. At that time, the IT job market was terrible. Companies weren't hiring new techs -
they were busy laying them off.
How was I supposed to support myself after losing my job, especially living in a city
as expensive as New York City?
Well, it turns out that losing my "comfortable" job was the best thing that
ever happened to me.
Let me explain...
Out of the Frying Pan And Straight Into the Fire...
I should have been worried but I wasn't. In fact, there was part of me that was really excited.
I had always wanted to start my own business, and here was the opportunity I had always
secretly hoped for.
So I decided to do the unthinkable and take a big risk. While my former co-workers were busy trying to find any computer tech job that provided a comfortable paycheck, I
went ahead and started my own computer consulting business. I figured " Why not hire myself instead?"
You're probably wondering why would I take such a huge gamble... especially since there was no one else who could support me if I failed? Well, to be honest it wasn't as a big of a
gamble as you might think.
You see, I started with by getting " rehired" by two previous clients of mine. My old boss's business was permanently closed and these clients still needed someone to take care of
their computer systems. They contacted me and let me know how much they needed me.
In fact, my first two clients needed me so badly that they gave me enough hours every week to keep me nicely paid. Now this was 1996 when the internet was in its infancy... remote support didn't exist yet...
and I was a brand-new business owner who knew very little about running my own business.
But it didn't matter to me then.
For the first time in my working career, I was absolutely loving the work I did. I never had to set the alarm clock. I slept in and instead of heading off to an office,
I'd spend my afternoons rollerblading in Central Park. Then whenever a client needed me, my pager would go off, I'd call and schedule some time for later in the day or the next day.
At the time, it was the perfect life for a single guy like me living in New York City. I had great freedom, no boss and a decent salary that I created from my own efforts.
When the referrals starting coming in, I had more than enough business to replace my old paycheck. Best of all, I saw a golden opportunity to turn my part-time gig into a full time business.
Of course, as my business began to grow, things began to become much more challenging...
From Employee To Empire Owner...
That's how my first computer consulting business in New York was born. I was really enjoying being my own boss but it wasn't always easy - especially in the early years. At that
time, I was learning by pure trial and error how to run a computer consulting business (thank goodness, I never made a business killing mistake during those early years!).
It didn't take long until the referrals starting rolling in.
That's a good thing, right? Well, not exactly.
While I really liked the feeling that my clients felt I was worthy of their referrals, it made my business life much more challenging. My work quickly went from taking care of a
handful of clients to needing to help many of them. That's when the big challenges started cropping up.
You see, there was no System Monitoring tools available that allowed me to minimize or prevent problems. You had to wait until a problem popped up and then quickly move to fix it for your
clients.
There was no Remote Support software available to allow me to address problems instantly or to be at two places at once. My daily routine became running from place to place. I'd
put out fires as quickly as possible in one location so I could rush off to handle the another client's emergency.
It didn't take long for my entire day to be nothing but rushing around from client to client, fixing their emergency computer problems that somehow seemed to always pop up.
Worse, the busier I got with client work, the less time I had to offer each individual client and that only made them even unhappier with me.
Growing an IT Support Firm used to be Extremely Difficult...
I quickly learned that there was a limit to how many clients I could personally handle in a given day - or even each week.
I was forced to make a tough decision: I could either hire additional techs or start turning away clients because I was already full-booked. I liked all of my
clients and hated the idea of letting them down - especially when they desperately needed my help, so I decided to hire some additional help...
And promptly opened up a whole new can of worms.
At the time, everyone's clients wanted and demanded low prices. It wasn't uncommon for clients to price-shop until they found someone cheaper - even if your competition wasn't nearly as
skilled or experienced as you.
The problem was that many well-qualified computer technicians demanded high salaries. I can remember times where I had to turn away a great applicant for a job opening I had, simply because
my business couldn't afford to pay them their high salary.
It was a tough lesson to learn but I'm awfully glad I did:
" When you're charging low prices and paying high wages
for your staffing needs, it's tough to stay in business for the long haul."

That Was Then... This Is NOW!
Fast forward to the present moment.
There's been some massive changes in our wonderful industry.
Now there are tools and
utilities for monitoring and remote support that have become very reliable. They are so reliable that even a single consultant is able to support a full client
base with much less time and effort.
